Alan Howard, President and CEO

Alan Howard, President Mr. Howard is President and CEO of Burroughs from its launch in February 2010. Prior to that appointment he was President of Unisys Payment Systems, a $200m worldwide business unit. In his 22 years with Unisys he has held numerous leadership positions driving change in the payment sector. Before being named President four years ago, he was Vice President and General Manager for Payment Systems North America.

His International experience is extensive and broad. As a board director of Unisys Ltd for Professional Services he was responsible for the successful deployment of high speed check processing and outsourcing services into the UK market that ultimately lead to Unisys processing 80% of the UK check volume in partnership with the country’s Top 3 Banks.

Mr. Howard spent two years as Vice President and Managing Partner Asia Pacific and three years as Vice President and General Manager of Financial Services Europe with 2,000 staff and $400m in revenue. He also has been on the board of two Unisys International offshore ventures, Synercom Ltd in the Philippines, and Tata Unisys Ltd in India.

 

Jerry Doubler, VP and Chief Financial Officer

Jerry DoublerMr. Doubler brings a consistent record of trusted financial leadership complemented with direct hands-on operational experience in service, manufacturing and distribution. He adds high value in both growth (merger & acquisition integration) and turnaround situations. Mr. Doubler has an upbeat “can do” leadership style, with excellent change management and continuous improvement skills, including business process redesign, six sigma and lean manufacturing.

Most recently, he was CFO and interim COO of an $800 million private-equity owned company where he improved working capital by $40 million in 12 months. Prior roles include:

  • CFO of a $200 million international subsidiary of a Fortune 500 company, increasing ROI from 3% to 14%.
  • VP/GM of a $250 million division of a publicly-traded company, leading a turnaround that improved profit by $15 million in 12 months.
  • COO of a $350 million organization, leading the successful integration of 20 acquired business units.
  • Co-owned and led an information technology services start-up company.

Mr. Doubler has a Bachelors of Science and Masters of Science from Ohio University, as well as an MBA from Youngstown State University.

 

Mike Zawalski, Operating Partner, Marlin Equity Partners

Mr. Zawalski is an Operating Partner focused on investment opportunities across multiple sectors, and brings to Burroughs a wealth of executive management and operations experience. His experience is broad based, including manufacturing, distribution, services, technology and consumer-based companies.

Before joining Marlin, he was President and CEO of Workflow One, an $850-million print management, technology and services provider. Before joining Workflow, he was Group President at Gores Technology Group (now the Gores Group) where he was responsible for the due diligence and operations for numerous Gores’ portfolio companies. Previously, he held senior executive positions at Mail-Well, Ryder, The Coleman Company, Quaker Oats, Heller Financial and Arthur Andersen.

Mr. Zawalski earned a Masters of Management from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and a B.S. in Accounting and Business Administration from Illinois State University. He also is a Certified Public Accountant.

 

Alan E. Grote, VP, North America Check and Servers Sales Channel

Mr. Grote leads the Sales organization for Burroughs. With more than 30 years of experience in sales and sales management with Unisys, he has spent the majority of his career serving the banking information technology field. During his tenure as Vice President – Sales for Payment Systems, he has organized the sales organization into one cohesive team-oriented unit consisting of 74 employees dedicated to success and achieving the goals of the organization. His organization also contains the support and product services functions required to perform presales and post sales services functions.

Before his current position, he was the Regional Vice President for the Southern Region for Unisys Systems and Technology Group. In this role, he was responsible for the general management of a $150 million region with more than 100 employees. For the preceding 15 years, he served as Area Director for the Mid-South Area covering eight states and responsible for revenues exceeding $40 million per year. In these roles, Mr. Grote managed the day to day sales, revenue, expenses and profits of the organization.

Mr. Grote earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business from the School of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, MO.

 

Mark Mellinger, VP, International Sales

Mark Mellinger Mr. Mellinger is Vice President of International Sales, responsible for the sales of Burroughs complete product line and partner relationships in the international marketplace.

Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Mellinger held a series of positions of increasing responsibility at Lexmark International from 2000 through 2010, including Vice President of Marketing and Director of Sales for their Commercial, Local Government and Education lines of business. Mr. Mellinger compiled an extensive record of success, with multiple honors for top Sales Director as well as Industry Director of the year. Prior to Lexmark International, he served in multiple capacities with Valvoline Company, including General Manager for Latin America and Division Manager for international sales.

Mr. Mellinger holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Engineering from the University of Kentucky.

 

Larry McCarter, VP & GM, Customer Services

Mr. McCarter is Vice President and General Manager, focused on industry-leading customer services and brings to Burroughs a broad background in global supply chain management, international partnerships, finance, and customer support. He is responsible for customer services operations for Burroughs’ differentiating set of products and services provided worldwide.

During Mr. McCarter’s leadership at Unisys his operations received recognition as an industry leader in Six Sigma Lean process capability and product quality; Including “Best Plants” recognition from Industry Week and the Association for Manufacturing Excellence. He has held management positions in both domestic and international manufacturing operations with proven success in developing global supply chain solutions. Mr. McCarter is an active member of the Michigan Manufacturing Lean Tour Group and supporter of local Political Action Committee activity.

Mr. McCarter has over 28 years of experience in a variety of Operations, Program Management and Financial Leadership roles. Prior to joining Burroughs he was VP and General Manager of Supply Chain Operations at Unisys. He holds a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration from Central Michigan University.

 

Bruce Young, VP, Supply Chain and Engineering

Mr. Young is a Vice President focused on product development and operations and brings to Burroughs a broad background in Product Development.   He is responsible for Research and Development and Supply Chain Operations for Burroughs’ check and custom engineered products.  Prior to his current position he was Director of Product Development, a position he held for nine years with both Burroughs Payment Systems and Unisys Corporation.

During Mr. Young’s leadership at Unisys he was directly responsible for the development of many industry leading product programs including the SmartSource family, NDP2000, NDP1150, NDP Quantum Series and SoftCAR recognition products.  In the early 1990’s he also led the development of major releases of the InfoImage Folder and ICPS / IIPS imaging applications. He has extensive experience in product development leveraging globally distributed development partners located in China, India and Europe.

Mr. Young has over 30 years of experience in a variety of Research & Development leadership roles. Prior to joining Burroughs he was Director of Development for Payment Systems with Unisys Corporation.  His career has also included roles as Director of Development for Document Management Products at Cimage Corporation in Ann Arbor, Michigan and as a Consultant / Systems Engineer with INCAA BV in Apeldoorn, Netherlands.  He holds a Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering and Electronics from the University of the West of Scotland, Paisley Scotland.

 

Ed McHugh, VP, Cash Automation Group

Mr. McHugh is a Vice President with Burroughs Payment Systems, managing Cash Automation Solutions. Prior to this role he led the Marketing, Research and Development and Program Management organization. Ed has more than 30 years of financial industry experience that includes retail delivery, cash management, and payment systems expertise. During this tenure he has held positions in Sales, Sales Management, Product and Program Management, Consulting and Services Delivery Management.

He authored several strategic white papers including: Lockbox 2000 a vision for Wholesale and Retail Lockbox, Payment Image Processing The Next Generation (Fee Income) leveraging payment infrastructure to generate fee income, and WEB BOX – The integration of paper and electronic payments.

Mr. McHugh is a strategic visionary in payment systems, and has presented the concepts outlined in his white papers at financial industry seminars including; Bank Administration Institute (BAI) Check and Image conferences, The Association for Work Process Improvement (TAWPI), Recognition Technology Users Association (RTUA), the AIC Check Imaging Conference and Global Concepts Cash Management Forum. Mr. McHugh has a Bachelors in Business Administration from Loyola University.

 

Phyllis Darden, VP, SPHR Human Resources

Ms. Darden is the Vice President of Human Resources and brings over 20 years of human resources experience within the Payment Systems and Logistics Services business as she provides strategic HR support for the global Payment Systems organization. Her primary responsibilities include overall development of benefit programs and policies as well as facilities management. Ms. Darden’s industry experience is broad based, including union negotiations, manufacturing, distribution, services, and technology companies.

Prior to joining Burroughs Payments Systems, she was Human Resources Business Partner at Unisys Corporation, supporting the Service Supply Chain Operations and the Managed Services Support organizations within Global Outsourcing and Infrastructure Systems (GOIS). She was the Global HR lead for an outsourcing initiative of the logistics services business and Global HR lead in a reclassification project impacting over 3,800 field service engineers worldwide. Prior to that assignment, Ms. Darden was a Human Resources Consultant with responsibility for recruiting, compensation, and resource development for the Systems & Technology organization. Ms. Darden is versed in the US Employment Laws as well as TUPE regulations and Acquired Rights Doctrines in Europe. She has served as the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Coordinator for a facility of over 1,000 employees and has successfully represented Unisys in field audits from the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).

Ms. Darden holds a Masters Degree in Industrial Relations from Wayne State University in Detroit Michigan and the Senior Professional Human Resources (SPHR) certification from the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM).

 

Don Kaas, VP, Commercial Management

Mr. Kaas has served in a variety of legal and executive management positions in the US and Europe during his 25 years with Unisys including Assistant General Counsel, Labor Relations, Vice President and Associate General Counsel, Ethics, General Counsel of both Unisys UK and World Trade subsidiaries, Vice President of Worldwide Operations for Unisys Information Systems unit, Vice President, Contracts for Unisys North American Operations.

Before joining Unisys, Mr. Kaas was in private legal practice and was a Labor Relations Counsel for Bethlehem Steel Corporation.

Mr. Kaas holds a B.A. from New York University and a J.D. from Villanova University and is a member of the Pennsylvania and Federal bars.
